It started at 3 a.m. in middle school, with Laura staying up past midnight styling her friends’ hair or cutting someone’s bangs on the school bus. Looking back, it was never really a question of whether she’d end up in the beauty industry. It was only a matter of time.
With 25 years of experience behind her, Laura found her true salon home when she opened The Beauty Mark in 2019. The timing wasn’t easy. COVID arrived just as she was getting started, forcing a shutdown before she could barely catch her breath. But she kept pushing. What began as a small suite in the old Valparaiso Tech building eventually grew into something much bigger when the opportunity to take over 705 Calumet came along.
With the patience, support and handy work of her husband and family, they rolled up their sleeves and made it happen. Sleepless nights and hard-earned lessons later, the space finally became what she always envisioned: a reflection of her whimsical, creative spirit.
Laura’s dream was simple, but meaningful. She wanted to build a comfortable, one-stop shop with good vibes, a safe and diverse space that feels like home. Growing up never quite fitting the mold herself, she set out to create a place where clients could not only perfect their outer beauty but celebrate their inner beauty, too. That’s The Beauty Mark.
